Today I present the Fallow deer (Dama dama). The pictures were taken this September in the natural reserve of “Aiguamolls de l’Empordà”. It was introduced in this park at the end of the eighties and he has adapted himself very well.
The fallow deer is a ruminant mammal belonging to the family Cervidae. It presents a beautiful chestnut coat with white mottles in spring and summer, and some have a dark band in the back. Only males have antlers, which are broad and shovel-shaped (palmate), a distinctive characteristic of this species.
The fallow deer were living originally in Europe, but after the last glaciations they nearly become extinct. The distribution was restricted to the South of Turkey. Nowadays, the fallow deer in Europe that are introduced descend from specimens raised in reserves. Its ideal habitat is the deciduous forest relatively humid, where they feed principally on sheets of the trees and shrubs and also on grass.
These 5 specimens appeared in “Closa de les Gantes” of the park walking along the water, something that it had never seen. I leave you with several of these photos.

The Fallow deer remind me of the spotted deer, also called Chital, in India. The forests of Bandhavgarh were filled with deer. Spotting the tiger was more difficult. 🙂
